About Pong Dam Wetland

Pong Dam Wetland, also known as Maharana Pratap Sagar, is a large reservoir on the Beas River in Kangra district. The Pong Dam created it, and it is one of the most important bird habitats in North India. International conservation groups recognise it as a Ramsar site.

Every winter, thousands of migratory birds arrive. From November to February, the shallow waters and small islands fill with bar-headed geese, pintails, coots, cormorants and egrets. Resident birds and raptors such as ospreys also live here.

The wetland and nearby hills are protected as a wildlife sanctuary. So keep noise low and avoid disturbing the birds or their nesting areas. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for sightings.

Carry binoculars, a zoom lens and warm clothes for cold mornings. Local guides and forest staff can help you find good viewpoints. Also follow the sanctuary rules, because they protect the birds.

The lake is a scenic place for quiet walks and photography. Villages around the reservoir show everyday life in the Kangra foothills. Sunset views over the water are worth the visit.

Check the weather and road conditions before you leave, so your plan stays flexible. Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you. For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people. When you plan well, the journey feels easier and far more enjoyable. Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills.
