About Bhakra Dam

Bhakra Dam is one of the most famous dams in India. It stands across the Sutlej River in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh, close to the Punjab border. It is among the highest straight gravity dams in the world.

The dam creates the huge reservoir of Gobind Sagar Lake. Because of this project, electricity and irrigation water reach several northern states. From the viewpoints, you can see the concrete wall rising between green hills, with the blue lake behind it.

Access to the dam area is regulated for security reasons. So visitors are usually allowed only at designated viewpoints and during specific hours. Carry a valid photo ID and check the latest rules before travelling.

Bhakra Dam combines well with Gobind Sagar Lake for boating, Bilaspur town for local food and Naina Devi Temple for a short pilgrimage. Nangal in Punjab, just downstream, adds another sightseeing option.

October to March is the best time to visit, with cooler weather and clear views. Carry water and sun protection in summer. Also follow the safety rules, because they keep the site open for everyone.

Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you. For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people. When you plan well, the journey feels easier and far more enjoyable. Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills. Start early in the day, so you have enough time and softer light for photos.
