About Chamera Lake

Chamera Lake is a large reservoir on the Ravi river in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh. The Chamera Dam created it. It lies near Dalhousie, about 25 km from the town, and green hills and pine forests frame its calm blue-green water.

It is one of the most popular short trips for visitors staying in Dalhousie and Khajjiar. Because the setting is peaceful, families and couples enjoy a relaxed day here. Also, the drive itself gives views of the Ravi valley and forested slopes.

Boating is the most popular activity. Depending on the season, local operators may also offer kayaking and other simple water sports. Always wear a life jacket and use licensed operators. So follow the safety instructions on the water.

The area around the lake is ideal for slow walks, photography and picnics. Early mornings and evenings are especially beautiful. Small stalls sell tea, snacks and local food, and a few camps and resorts offer stays by the water.

March to June and September to November are the best months. Carry sun protection in summer and light woollens for evenings. Also avoid the monsoon if you want clear views. Please keep the lake clean.

For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people. When you plan well, the journey feels easier and far more enjoyable. Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills. Start early in the day, so you have enough time and softer light for photos.
