About Lakshmi Narayan Temple
Lakshmi Narayan Temple is the most important heritage temple of Chamba town in Himachal Pradesh. It stands near the Chaugan open ground at around 996 metres. It is the main temple of a group of six old stone shrines, so it is widely regarded as one of the oldest temple complexes in the Himalayan foothills.
The temple dates back to around the 10th century and follows the traditional Shikhara style, with a tall curved tower and carved stone walls. Inside the main sanctum, Lord Vishnu is worshipped with Goddess Lakshmi. Other temples in the complex honour Radha Krishna, Chandragupta Mahadev and Gauri Shankar.
The compound is calm and well kept, with a wide courtyard and views of the town and the Ravi valley. Because the architecture is rich, visitors often spend an hour or two admiring it. Also, the evening aarti adds a lively devotional mood.
Chamba has much more to offer. You can walk around the Chaugan, visit the Bhuri Singh Museum and see the Champavati temple. Then shop for the famous Chamba rumal embroidery. The Minjar Fair in July or August fills the town with colour and music.
March to June and September to November are the best times to visit. Remove your shoes at the entrance and dress modestly. Combine Chamba with Khajjiar, Dalhousie and Bharmour for a full trip.
Start early in the day, so you have enough time and softer light for photos. Wear comfortable shoes, and carry water and a light rain jacket, because mountain weather changes fast. If you travel with children or elders, plan short breaks and keep the schedule relaxed.
