About Kinner Kailash
Kinner Kailash is one of the most sacred mountains of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh. It rises to around 6,050 metres and stands opposite Kalpa and Reckong Peo. Hindus and Buddhists worship it as one of the abodes of Lord Shiva.
The mountain is famous for a natural rock formation of about 79 feet, which people worship as a Shivling. According to belief, it changes colour during the day. Pilgrims trek to see it, and the Kinner Kailash Yatra is usually held in August.
The pilgrimage trek starts near Tangling village, close to Reckong Peo, and climbs steeply. The route is demanding, so go with local guides, good fitness and proper acclimatisation. Also carry warm clothes, rain gear, water and a first-aid kit.
Even if you do not trek, the views from Kalpa and Reckong Peo are spectacular. At sunrise the peak glows gold and pink. Because of this, many travellers make the mountain the centrepiece of a Kinnaur trip with Kalpa, Sangla Valley and Chitkul.
July to September is the best time to visit. Winters bring heavy snow and closed trails. Check the yatra dates and local rules in advance, and keep the mountain clean.
Wear comfortable shoes, and carry water and a light rain jacket, because mountain weather changes fast. If you travel with children or elders, plan short breaks and keep the schedule relaxed. However, avoid rushing, because the best moments here come from slowing down and looking around. Check the weather and road conditions before you leave, so your plan stays flexible. Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you.
