About Nako Lake
Nako Lake is a small, peaceful high-altitude lake in Nako village of Kinnaur district, Himachal Pradesh. It lies at around 3,660 metres, near the Indo-Tibet border on the road to Spiti. Willow and poplar trees surround the lake, and mountain slopes rise behind it.
The village sits beside the water with mud-brick houses, prayer flags and quiet lanes. The calm lake reflects the sky and mountains, especially in the early morning and at sunset. In winter, however, the lake freezes and turns the whole village white.
Nako also has an old Buddhist monastery linked with the translator Rinchen Zangpo. A rock nearby carries a footprint said to be that of Guru Padmasambhava. Because of these sites, the visit is meaningful for those who enjoy Himalayan Buddhism and history.
The road to Nako is long, about 12 to 14 hours from Shimla. So acclimatise with a night in Kalpa or Sangla, drink plenty of water and avoid rushing. Carry warm clothes even in summer.
May to October is the best time to visit. Winters can close roads and cut off the village. Nako makes an ideal halt for road-trippers heading to Tabo, Kaza and the rest of Spiti.
Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills. Start early in the day, so you have enough time and softer light for photos. Wear comfortable shoes, and carry water and a light rain jacket, because mountain weather changes fast. If you travel with children or elders, plan short breaks and keep the schedule relaxed.
