About Dhankar Monastery
Dhankar Monastery is a striking Buddhist monastery in Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh. It is perched on a steep cliff at around 3,890 metres and overlooks the meeting point of the Spiti and Pin rivers. Because of its position, it is one of the most photographed sights in Spiti.
The name Dhankar means fort, and the village was once the capital of the Spiti rulers. Old fort ruins stand above the monastery. Monks still live and worship here, so the place feels alive and not just historic.
A walk of about two to three kilometres leads to Dhankar Lake, a small high-altitude lake among barren mountains. The path is steep and the altitude is high, so walk slowly and carry water. Also, the views of the valley from the lake are wonderful.
Dhankar is about 32 km from Kaza and works well as a day trip or a halt between Kaza and Tabo. Simple homestays offer warm food and beds. Carry warm clothes even in summer, because it gets cold quickly.
May to October is the best time to visit. Winters are extremely cold and roads can close. Then combine Dhankar with Tabo, Kaza, Key Monastery and Kibber, and respect monastery rules.
Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you. For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people. When you plan well, the journey feels easier and far more enjoyable. Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills.
