About Tabo Monastery
Tabo Monastery is one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas. It stands in Tabo village of Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, at around 3,050 metres. Rinchen Zangpo founded it around 996 CE, so it is one of the oldest continuously functioning monasteries in India.
The complex has several temples and stupas built with mud-brick walls. Inside, ancient wall paintings, clay sculptures and old manuscripts have survived for centuries. Because of this, people often call Tabo the Ajanta of the Himalayas. The dim halls, butter lamps and chanting create a deeply calm mood.
Above the village, you can see the Tabo caves, where monks once meditated. The surrounding landscape is a stark cold desert with green barley fields and willow trees along the Spiti river. It feels like another world compared to the rest of Himachal.
Tabo is roughly 45 km from Kaza and can be reached from Shimla via Kinnaur and Nako. Simple homestays offer warm meals, and the village is a good overnight halt. Photography inside may be restricted, so ask permission first.
May to October is the best time to visit. Carry warm clothes and take care of the altitude. Then combine Tabo with Dhankar Monastery, Kaza, Key Monastery and Kibber.
However, avoid rushing, because the best moments here come from slowing down and looking around. Check the weather and road conditions before you leave, so your plan stays flexible. Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you. For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people.
