About Pin Valley
Pin Valley is a scenic valley in Spiti of Himachal Pradesh, formed by the Pin river, a tributary of the Spiti. Unlike the barren landscapes elsewhere in Spiti, it has patches of green fields, small villages and forests. Much of it lies inside the Pin Valley National Park, a protected cold desert wilderness.
The national park is home to rare Himalayan wildlife. You may see the ibex, blue sheep and red fox, and the elusive snow leopard lives here too. Sightings are not guaranteed, but wildlife lovers come with local guides and patience. Even without an animal in sight, the cliffs, rivers and meadows are memorable.
Mudh is the last village on the road and a peaceful base for exploring the valley. Nearby, Kungri Monastery is a calm stop with prayer halls and views over the valley. Also, simple homestays offer warm meals and comfortable beds.
Pin Valley is also the starting point of the challenging Pin Parvati Pass trek. This trek connects Spiti with the Parvati Valley, but it is difficult. So it needs preparation, permits and a guide. For most visitors, the drive and short walks are the best way to enjoy the valley.
June to October is the best time to visit. However, winters are extremely cold and roads can close. Then combine Pin Valley with Dhankar, Tabo and Kaza for a complete Spiti journey.
Keep the surroundings clean, and carry your waste back with you. For a smoother trip, book your stay and transport in advance during peak season. Also respect local customs, and ask before you take photos of people.
