About Kibber

Kibber is a remote high-altitude village in Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh, at around 4,270 metres. It is among the highest villages in the world connected by a motorable road. Stone houses, an open plateau and snow-capped peaks make it a remarkable stop.

The village is about 20 km from Kaza and close to Key Monastery and Chicham Bridge, so it is easy to include in a day trip. Its road climbs steadily, and the landscape becomes a wide, barren plateau. Because the air is thin and cold, take it slowly.

Kibber is also known for the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary. It is home to the Himalayan ibex, blue sheep and the elusive snow leopard. Sightings of the snow leopard are rare and best in winter with local guides. Even without wildlife, the views and silence are unforgettable.

Simple homestays offer warm meals and beds, and the night sky is full of stars. Sunrise and sunset light up the mountains and stone houses, so photographers love the village. Also carry warm clothes and drink plenty of water.

May to October is the best time for a comfortable visit. Winters are extremely cold, but they offer the best chance to spot snow leopards. Combine Kibber with Key Monastery, Langza, Komic and Chandratal.

Also, carry a valid photo ID and some cash, because network and cards can be unreliable in the hills. Start early in the day, so you have enough time and softer light for photos. Wear comfortable shoes, and carry water and a light rain jacket, because mountain weather changes fast. If you travel with children or elders, plan short breaks and keep the schedule relaxed.

Frequently Asked Questions about Kibber

Find answers to the most common questions about this listing, booking, payments, and our services.

Kibber is a high-altitude village in Spiti Valley of Lahaul and Spiti district in Himachal Pradesh, at about 4,270 metres. It lies roughly 20 km from Kaza and is reached by a mountain road, near Key Monastery and Chicham Bridge.

Kibber is famous as one of the highest villages in the world connected by road, and for its stone houses and open landscapes. It is also known as a base for spotting Himalayan wildlife, including the elusive snow leopard, in the Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary.

Kibber is reached by road from Kaza, about 20 km away, and taxis are available. From Shimla, Kaza is reached via Kinnaur in around 12 to 14 hours or via Manali and Kunzum Pass. The nearest railhead is Shimla or Kalka.

May to October is the best time for pleasant weather and open roads. For snow leopard sightings, winter from January to March is the best time, but it is extremely cold and roads can be hard to travel, so plan carefully with local guides.

Snow leopards live in the area, and winter is the best time to spot them, but sightings are rare and not guaranteed. Local guides and wildlife tours can help. Carry warm gear, binoculars and patience, and follow the rules of the sanctuary.

You can walk around the village, visit the nearby Key Monastery and Chicham Bridge, enjoy the mountain views, try local food and stay in a homestay. Wildlife spotting and photography are also popular, especially at sunrise and sunset.

A half-day trip from Kaza is enough for Kibber, or one night if you want to enjoy the stars and quiet. Add extra days if you want to combine it with Key Monastery, Langza, Komic and Chandratal on a longer Spiti itinerary.
